National Provider Identifier (NPI)

A unique 10-digit number that identifies every healthcare provider in the United States.

NPIs are issued by CMS and listed in the public NPPES registry along with the provider's name, specialty (taxonomy) and practice addresses. Individual clinicians have Type 1 NPIs; organizations such as hospitals and group practices have Type 2.

MRFs tie every rate to NPIs, and NPPES ties NPIs to addresses. Together they make it possible to answer location questions, like what a procedure costs in a given city.
