Hospital price transparency

A separate federal rule requiring hospitals to publish their standard charges, including payer-specific negotiated charges.

In effect since January 1, 2021, the hospital rule requires each hospital to post a machine-readable file of its standard charges and a consumer-friendly list of shoppable services.

Hospital files come from the provider side and cover only that hospital. Insurer MRFs come from the plan side and cover every in-network provider. Used together, they give two independent views of the same prices.

Know the price, everywhere.
